Description

Did you know your female clients may be at a higher risk of injury during certain times of the menstrual cycle?

Women make up half the population of the planet, yet for decades they have been persistently under-represented in medical and performance research. Exos is determined to do what we can to help remove the stigma of periods and female physiology from fitness training, as an industry, to improve results for the athletes and clients we support.

This online continuing education course is how we get started. As the global leader in human performance, Exos saw this research on female athletes and the effects of hormones and the menstrual cycle on performance as our responsibility to ensure our community is equipped to best coach, guide and train athletes with female physiology.

A systems based approach will be taken to the implementation of this information through the examination of several case studies, including an emphasis on the risk of low energy availability and the detrimental role that it can have.

Learning Objectives:

  1. How to modify game plan recommendations to leverage the unique physiology of the menstrual cycle.
  2. Outline the physiology of the menstrual cycle, and present the cyclical rise and fall of sex hormones throughout.
  3. Present information on the physiological impact of the most common types of non-barrier contraception.
  4. Discuss the impact of low energy availability and the relationship it has to the development or progression of menstrual irregularities.
  5. Outline scope of practice and discuss when a coach should refer out to a qualified professional.
  6. Review the Exos model of human performance, with specific emphasis on game-plans, game-plan components, and examples of each.
